Stung Meanchey waste dump
is located in Southern Phnom
Penh, in a district of the city
of the same Name, Stung
Meanchey. It is a part of the
city with low-income neighborhoods
and slums. The dump itself covers
about 100 acres. It is flanked by
private property on which rubbish
pickers build makeshift huts and
and are charged extorionate
rent by landowners. Roughly
2,000 people, about 600 are
children, live and work there.

Srey Gao was born six months premature in a hospital in Cambodia. Being born in a hospital in Cambodia is a rarity. She was given the name Gao (glass because, in her first few days of life, her bed was a glass incubator. After she arrived home, her Mother tossed her into the garbage dump to die, but her seventy year old grandmother rescued her from an inevitable death. Since then, her grandmother has provided care for her, but being at such an advanced age, it has been very difficult for her.

When we found Gao and her grandmother, Gao ws working at the dump 10 hours a day 6 days a week. They were living in a tiny 10x10 shack that sat atop a mosquito infested ditch. We asked Gao what she wanted most of all, she said, " I would like to goto school."

We would like to thank our supporters, but particularly Nate and Charity Hoffman for their qucik support of Gao. We have snice moved Gao and her grandmother into a much larger home. They now have enough to eat, and they live in a much larger home. Gao also studies English two hours every day.
